Structure of Education

Schooling in Austria includes 9 years of compulsory education — from age 6 to 15. After primary school, students are streamed into different types of schools based on their abilities and interests. Higher education follows the Bologna system: a bachelor's degree takes 3 years, and a master's takes 2 years. Admission: What Is Required

For admission to private and international schools, you'll need proof of language proficiency — German or English, depending on the programme. Some schools also conduct interviews and ask for academic transcripts.

For university admission, international students need a school‑leaving certificate recognised in Austria and proof of German proficiency — ÖSD C1, Goethe-Zertifikat C1, or TestDaF with a TDN 4 result (level C1). Some master's programmes are taught in English, in which case IELTS or TOEFL is sufficient. For certain specialisations, entrance exams may be required.

Cost of Tuition

• A year at a private international school in Austria costs €10,000–30,000, depending on the school and the pupil's age. For example, at the Vienna International School, the cost ranges from €15,896 to €29,160; at Meridian Privatschule — around €13,824 per year; and at the Theresianum school with accommodation and meals — €10,880 per semester.
• At public universities, tuition for international students is significantly lower — approximately €1,450 per year (€726.72 per semester) for non-EU citizens. EU and Swiss citizens pay around €727 per year. Additionally, a student union fee (ÖH-Beitrag) of about €25 per semester is payable.

These figures cover tuition only. Accommodation, meals, insurance, study materials, and transport are all extra. However, the cost of living in Austria is moderate compared to neighbouring Germany or Switzerland.
